What I've Been Listening To This Week (1999-2000)

On this page you will be able to view a list of CD's I've been listening to each week. The week begins Sunday and ends Saturday and only albums will be counted, not single songs (off the radio or MP3). If I didn't finish an album but heard most of it then I will still add the CD to the list. Comments will be made sporadically. If I listened to a CD for the first time I will try to note that and my opinion of it.

Sunday, November 14 - Saturday, November 20
AIR - Moon Safari
Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile - "left" disc
Sting - Brand New Day NEW. Mom's new CD. I really liked the first track but the rest pretty much sucked.
Soul Coughing - Irresistable Bliss great album. "Sleepless" became my ode late last week. See Do Not Read.
Squarepusher - Feed Me Weird Things NEW! fucking incredible album. everything I hoped for and more.
The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band borrowed. perhaps not the best album ever made, but damn good. quite innovative considering it came out in 1967. lots of great songs on this one, standouts include "Within You Without You" and "A Day In The Life"
TOOL - Ænima
Neil Young - Harvest
Eric Clapton - Cream of Clapton NEW. best of.
Weezer - Weezer NEW. pretty cool melodies!
Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile - "right" disc the depth of this album never ceases. I am still learning new things. this is the first time I really got the cellos in "The Mark Has Been Made". what an amazing album. it's truly the gift that keeps on giving.
Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral
Sunday, November 21 - Saturday, November 27
U2 - Pop NEW ! this cd very much sucks outside of about 4 tracks ("Please", "Staring At The Sun", "Wake Up Dead Man", and another one). too much outside work by Howie B whose work I like with Bjork but makes no sense with U2. fortunately for their next album they are moving away from this and towards a classic U2 style.
Smashing Pumpkins - live in Detroit 4/10/99 NEW! burned cd-r disc 1 of 2. full of new unreleased songs for possible inclusion on their new album. standouts include "Dross", "Blue Skies Bring Tears", "Speed Kills", "Stand Inside Your Love", and a really messy version of "Ava Adore". I've now listened to both discs...
Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile - "left" disc
Radiohead - The Bends .immerse your soul in love.
Fluke - Risotto borrowed from Russel for at least the 2nd time... some day I shall own it
Squarepusher - Feed Me Weird Things got to showcase this cd for my recently estranged cousin Ben... he was blown away. I can't blame him, this is one of the best cd's I own.
Ol' Dirty Bastard - Nigga Please always fun
Nine Inch Nails - Hunt For The Fragile self-made bootleg
Girls Against Boys - Disco Six Six Six an EP
The Beta Band - The Three EP's song about "taking me in and drying the rain" took a new meaning. good trumpet.
Outkast - Aquemini some of the best lyrics I've ever heard. better than all rap and even most rock. incredible.
Sunday, November 28 - Saturday, December 4
Manic Street Preachers - This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless so much hype... much of it deserved. sounds like The Breeders w/ lots of distortion
Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile - "right" disc
Radiohead - OK Computer albums really don't get any better than this
Squarepusher - Feed Me Weird Things
AIR - Moon Safari
Faultline - Mute cd-single from James... this is a really creative (and dark) single. 3 tracks, the title track heavily sampling a piano & guitar line from none other than Tori Amos. wait till I tell James.
Aphex Twin - Come To Daddy I must say, this is the best listen I have had with this CD yet. truly a work of art, full of wacky rhythms, distorted samples, backmasked beats and plinks, tons of drum 'n' bass and spooky keyboard riffs. my favorite quote: "You have so many machines, Richard." -Aphex Twin's mom
Nirvana - In Utero not very good outside of "Rape Me" and "Heart Shaped Box".
Bjork - Telegram Post-era remix album
Sunday, December 5 - Saturday, December 11
Live - Mental Jewelery the week starts on a sad note as my 3rd favorite cd is scratched to death. about 3 tracks are incredibly damaged so I will have to buy this album for the 3rd time. it's such a good album, I should listen to it more. "war disease and famine, this demon she is everywhere." peace is now, motherfucker.
Squarepusher - Feed Me Weird Things
Aphex Twin - On an EP or cd-single depending on how you look at it. I love the song "On"!
Korn - Follow The Leader not sure what made me pick this up today, after nearly a year of not having listened to it. this must be my 4th listen ever. surprisingly, it's a good cd. I always figured it sucked. when the songs aren't on the radio every hour you can actually stand listening to them on the cd. standouts include the loud opener "It's On!" which, although rocking, has some really gay lyrics. all the rap duets are good - "Children of da Korn" w/ the amazing Ice Cube (great lyrics from him on this track - "stop fucking with me!"), "All in the Family" w/ Fred Durst (Limp Bizkit) before his ego took over him completely, and "Cameltosis" w/ Tre Hardison of the Pharcyde. Korn tracks like "Dead Bodies Everywhere" are the type of fun meaningless heavy rock I actually like. it's all pretty cool, maybe I'll pick it up again in a few months....
Orbital - The Middle Of Nowhere I had "Nothing Left 2" stuck in my head this morning...
MP3 Mix CD-R Vol. 1 - "Space 160" NEW, burned cd-r of mp3's I like. I called it "Space 160" because most of the mp3's were in high quality 160 bps and they were taking up a lot of space. it's a pretty good compilation, songs range from Incubus to Tricky to Death In Vegas.
Radiohead - The Bends just wanted to listen to a cd I love on my birthday...
Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine noticed for the first time Trent sings "made" and "carved" overlapping in the last verse of "Ringfinger". very weird.
The Beatles - Rubber Soul borrowed, like Sgt. Pepper's, also from Nick. a solid album that I enjoyed listening to. it made many critics lists for top 10 albums ever. Nick says it sounds like a boy band. I can see that, kind of. it's hard to pick out standout tracks because most of them are equal in quality. first half totally dominates the second half though. I will try to buy this cd for about $3 used if I see it.
Live - The Distance To Here
Live - Throwing Copper
Moby - Play
U.N.K.L.E. - Psyence Fiction that science fiction boys vs. girls music. had to stop mid-way because those annoying guitars came on.
Sunday, December 12 - Saturday, December 18
Stone Temple Pilots - Purple NEW! $2.50! used at Record Exchange... finally I get into grunge music! forgot how many radio songs are on this cd... overall a very good album especially for its price
U.N.K.L.E. - Psyence Fiction I really hope DJ Shadow goes down in history as one of the best musicians of the century. and those annoying guitars aren't really so bad!
Radiohead - My Iron Lung + Then Sum LP a CD-R of rare, live and unreleased Radiohead tracks I chose. very good cd except that "Big Ideas" is totally scratched.
Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral
Paul Oakenfold - Global Underground 2 - New York NEW. very rave-y, I like it.
The Beatles - Revolver borrowed. a great disc, perhaps better than Sgt. Pepper's. closes with "Tomorrow Never Knows", the first song ever to use breakbeats, I think. sounds like Chemical Brothers' "Setting Sun" samples the drums on this one.
"The Crow: City Of Angels" Soundtrack amazing album, I liked listening to it so much that I wrote a review of it, even though the CD is three years old. check the "Riory Ress" section to read it!
DJ Shadow - Endtroducing
TOOL - Undertow NEW! great dark album, but it's not a masterpiece like their followup Ænima
Sunday, December 19 - Saturday, December 25
Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue NEW! about $8.99 @ Best Buy. remastered; bonus track.
X-Japan - Art Of Life the 29 minute epic song on one CD-R. this song rocks, forget those kids at St. Anselm's!
Simple Minds - Real To Real Cacophony NEW. bizarre new wave pioneers on this '82 set...
Snoop Doggy Dogg - Doggystyle back from Niraj. it ain't no fuuuuun if the homeys can't haaaave none!
TOOL - Ænima was subject to some discussion today at school
Andrea Parker - Kiss My Arp one of James's latest acquisitions. very good, although I only heard half of it.
TOOL - Undertow
Mogwai - Come On Die Young NEW CD-R
Faultline - Closer Colder NEW CD-R
Moby - Moby NEW, Christmas. so darn oldskool.
Sunday, December 26 - Saturday, January 1
Foo Fighters - There Is Nothing Left To Lose NEW. not quite as good as their previous album...
Orbital - Diversions NEW, f/ a dope Underworld remix of "Lush"!
"Natural Born Killers" Soundtrack produced by Trent Reznor #1
"Lost Highway" Soundtrack produced by Trent Reznor #2
Squarepusher - Maximum Priest  NEW, ebay.
Black Sabbath - Paranoid NEW
"Spawn" Soundtrack techno meets rock at it's near best, but the possibilities could have been endless for this
Mogwai - Mogwai EP downloaded it over night
Squarepusher - Music Is Rotted One Note it's tempting to say this is the album where Tom lost it, but that's not fair. this is a very good album, it just happens to reject the music of all his previous work. it is not drum 'n' bass, rather it is an electronica genius's update of Miles Davis's "Bitches Brew"
Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
Aphex Twin - Windowlicker
Aphex Twin - live at Hallam University great rendition of "Matchsticks"
Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92 I was able to download most of it. 1 track has 5 minutes missing, and 3 or 4 of the 13 tracks I just couldn't find. but great stuff. by the way, Richard was only 14 in 1985! all 13 tracks cull from 13 90-minute tapes of AFX music that Richard shared with musician friends.
Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works Volume 2 insane. brilliant. "too scary for words" -my mom. i listened to this while I painted.
Aphex Twin - Come To Daddy
Bjork - All Is Full Of Love cd-single mp3's -- last track cut off =(

Beck - Midnite Vultures
2Pac - Greatest Hits borrowed from Nick; a bunch of songs I had never heard before
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless what a cool album. too bad it's taken Kevin Shields 9 years (and counting) to follow it up.
VAST - Visual Audio Sensory Theater
Squarepusher/Chaos A.D. - Buzz Caner NEW, ebay. drum 'n' bass but not as well crafted as prior albums. released in 1998, it is not electronic jazz like his other '98 cd "Music Is Rotted One Note"
David Bowie - Low NEW. not that great. 3 very cool tracks though. surprisingly, it is mostly instrumental(!)
Aphex Twin/AFX - Analogue Bubblebath 5 unreleased. vinyl only, about 500 copies pressed. found super high quality mp3's.
Nine Inch Nails - Sin (cd single) get down make love!!
Sunday, January 16 - Saturday, January 22

Aphex Twin - Peel Session 1 featuring a SAW2 track ("Radiator") only with a techno beat! cool!
Eminem - The Slim Shady LP great album. excellent production, music and rapping.
Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile - "right" disc
Radiohead - My Iron Lung + Then Sum LP the "My Iron Lung" EP plus 7 or 8 live performances of UNRELEASED songs and a few b-sides for filler. songs like "How To Disappear Completely And Never Be Found" and "Big Ideas" blow my fucking mind. especially "Disappear"; what an incredible song. the studio version may in fact become my favorite song by them, but we'll see in a few months (June?).
Smashing Pumpkins - Machina (comes out Feb. 29) not excellent, but at least better than Adore. a few standout tracks, the rest are a little below average for them...
Eels - Beautiful Freak there's truth in everything, there's truth in lies... what a kickass disc.
Aphex Twin - Classics NEW, ebay. album title speaks for itself. Belgium import.
Blur - 13
AIR - Moon Safari

Beck - Midnite Vultures
Squarepusher - Big Loada EP
Billy Corgan - acoustic concert 1/15/98 - Viper Room, LA featuring almost all Adore previews
DJ Shadow - live on the BBC Evening Sessions I finally have all 6 great tracks. very rockin' renditions of "Lonely Soul" (over a year before it was released), "Lost And Found" and "High Noon"
Squarepusher - Music Is Rotted One Note
Wu-Tang Clan - Wu-Tang Forever FUCK YEAH, i forgot how excellent this album was. it's the best hip-hop cd, ever. RZA is fucking brilliant for performing and producing this music. incredible. kicks the ass of DMX's 1st album and Outkast's 3rd album, my 2nd and 3rd fave rap albums.
AIR - The Virgin Suicides film score downloaded. EXCELLENT. really dark soundtrack. might write a review of it.
Beck - Golden Feelings downloaded. his first album. indie pressed, 1993, out of print. it sucks.
Squarepusher - Feed Me Weird Things
Beck - Western Harvest Field By Moonlight downloaded. his 2nd album, also indie pressed. experimental, not terrible but not very listenable either. very amateur.
DJ Shadow - Endtroducing
Radiohead - The Bends
Warner Bros. Records - Loss Leaders 2 Compilation NEW. cost me $0.50. one of 2500 copies pressed. featuring live tracks and unreleased songs by RHCP, Cibo Matto, Citizen King, Porno For Pyros, etc. in perfect condition.
Woodstock '94 NEW. cost me $12 for a double disc set. nice stuff from Live, Metallica, etc. and a PROFESSIONAL recording of NIN "Happiness In Slavery", much better than my copy of it on a Woodstock '94 bootleg (Mudpigs) that I have.
Sunday, January 30 - Saturday, February 4
Squarepusher - Big Loada EP
Aphex Twin - Richard D. James Album
Elastica - Elastica

Sunday, February 5 - Saturday, February 11
Primal Scream - XTRMNTR downloaded it, nearly 2 months before its official release in March. pretty cool =)
Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral
DJ Shadow - Preemptive Strike NEW. aw yea, the DJ Shadow b-sides collection. my collection is complete, for now.
Soundgarden - A-Sides 79 minute "best of" album. man, Soundgarden were so cool. total guitar alchemy, and Cornell has an incredible voice.
Mogwai - Young Team NEW. paid $1 for this CD-R from James. another excellent album from Mogwai. R U Still Into It? tons of great songs, including the 16 minute epic "Mogwai Fear Satan".
2 Bad Mice - Kaotic Chemistry also 79 minutes. I hadn't listened to this album in over 2 years. cheezy techno music, but not as cheezy as I had thought it would be. basically a stereotypical club album.  bizarre samples harking back to early Moby and Massive Attack, if a high school student tried to rip them off. get this, the record label is "smi:)e".
Sunday, February 13 - Saturday, February 19
Mogwai - Come On Die Young "Ex-Cowboy" is such an incredible song, as is "May Nothing But Happiness Come Through Your Door"
Aphex Twin - Windowlicker
Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile - "right" disc
Smashing Pumpkins - Machina
Portishead - Dummy JUST GIVE ME A REASON TO BE A WOMAN!
Mogwai - Young Team
Smashing Pumpkins - Bullet With Butterfly Wings cd-single first disc of Aeroplane Flies High box set that I am borring. awesome single, complete with tons of GREAT cover tunes! James Iha sings the cure!
AIR - The Virgin Suicides film score excellent. more of a guitar and drums oriented project. slick usage of movie samples on some of the tracks. I look forward to their true next album.
Smashing Pumpkins - 1979 cd-single second disc. has straight up alternative sounding bonus cuts. album-ish.
Smashing Pumpkins - Zero cd-single third. has METAL songs. ok, but highlight is definitely "Pistachio Medley" - a 26 minute cut and paste medley of 50 unreleased song clips!
Sunday, February 20 - Saturday, February 26
Smashing Pumpkins - Tonight, Tonight cd-single fourth. has nice acoustic songs! kinda cool.
Coil - Unnatural History II something I never got around to listening to even though I downloaded it overnight Thursday
Smashing Pumpkins - Thirty-Three cd-single fifth and final of the box set. great! a lot of these songs are definitely album worthy, like the box set's rocking 8:30 title track.
Ol' Dirty Bastard - Nigga Please just trying to throw you a curve ball, I guess ;)
Sunday, February 27 - Saturday, March 4
Ryuichi Sakamoto - 1996 borrowed from Nick... great neo-classical album from Japanese contemporary performer. may see him live next month. Andrea Parker and Oval have remixed him before.
Aphex Twin - Ventolin Remixes
Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile - "left" disc "We're In This Together" is such an incredible song!
Smashing Pumpkins - Machina bought a legal copy the day it came out. $12.99. great album! especially with my fancy new headphons.
Smashing Pumpkins - Machina bonus disc: "Still Becoming Apart" a cool 5 track bonus EP they threw in with Machina. all the tracks are great, including a studio version of "Blissed And Gone" which they've been playing live for over 2 years now.
Ghostface Killah - Supreme Clientele NEW. bought same night as SP. good disc, definitely harks back to "Wu-Tang Forever". needs further analysis though.

Ghostface Killah - Supreme Clientele
Moby - Play
The Cure - Staring At The Sea: The Singles '76-'86
David Bowie / Nine Inch Nails - I'm Afraid Of Americans NEW. remix EP - all music by NIN except 1 track remixed by Photek. guest rap by Ice Cube on V3! awesome album.

Aphex Twin - Richard D. James Album
Sunday, March 26 - Saturday, April 1

Tori Amos - from the choirgirl hotel a fucking WICKED album is what it comes down to. especially with an ace pair of headphones. one of my favorite cd's, I don't know why I hadn't listened to it more. I listened to it tonight because I routinely check my cd's for scratches, etc. when I get them back from loaning them.
Buena Vista Social Club - Buena Vista Social Club (presented by Ry Cooder). borrowed from Nick. good cd. world music is k00l. track 1 is the best.

Nas - Illmatic not really new, I bought it in early December. just listened to it now. it's good but I can't really get into this music nowadays.
2Pac - R U Still Down? [Remember Me] I bought this last night, April 19, 2000. It was stolen from me in May 1998. Not as good as I had remembered it being, but OK. Paid $12 (2CD) for it used and I think initially I paid $22 new. Is it worth $34? No, but shit happens.
Fila Brazillia - Black Market Gardening mmm.. tripophonic.
Warp Records 10+1 - "Influences" Compilation - disc 1 of 2 kinda boring music but a good insight on the innovations in the '80s that inspired the geniuses at Warp
Primus - Tales From The Punchbowl NEW, but I prefer "Pork Soda"
Arab Strap - Elephant Shoe downloaded it.. beautiful cd.
Korn - Life Is Peachy not very good
Sunday, April 23 - Saturday, April 29
Orbital - The Box EP a 28 minute, 4 movement version of one of my favorite instrumentals.. lovely
Prick - Prick bought used for $6... not as good as expected. Trent produced. disc itself is scratched. music is kinda cheerful in an industrial sort of way.
Bjork - Debut wonderful and majestic cd, one of my favorites. I feel awful having not listened to it for almost a year; I have totally underestimated the cd. especially the lyrics; Bjork has some truly great songwriting on her first solo album. case in point, "Like Someone In Love"; this is how I think her new musical score will sound. sweet and lovely song. and of course I forgot how good her voice is even on her first cd. something I intend to listen to much more. all the songs are so good. wow.
Bjork - Venus As A Boy cd-single
Nine Inch Nails - Broken no album rocks harder.
Tori Amos - To Venus And Back - "live. still orbiting" disc (live tracks) very good..

Moby - Hymn alt.quiet version not what I expected. after a while it becomes weird noise / sound fx. gets loud. talk about a misnomer. but an interesting version of "Hymn," although it's really a bunch of different versions played consecutively.
Moby - Move EP cool disco dan
Common - Like Water For Chocolate incredible. bought a copy for myself.
Bjork - Selmasongs NEW. not like her albums at all, but highly enjoyable and unique. lots of cool production ideas.
Ryuichi Sakamoto - Cinemage borrowed from Nick. nice live renditions of his best work. highlight is definitely "Forbidden Colours"
Insane Clown Posse - Bizzar Bizaar promo sampler new. ick. it was labeled with "???"  in a box of free promo stuff.

Radiohead - Kid A
Neil Young - Silver & Gold NEW. very cool. much like Harvest.
Sunday, October 15 - Saturday, October 21
Handsome Boy Modeling School - So... How's Your Girl? NEW. a neo-classic by hip-hop producers-extraordinaires Prince Paul and the Automator. Featuring great samples of the Chris Elliot sitcom "Get A Life" (talk about obscure) and collaborations with DJ Shadow, DJ Quest, Alec Empire, Del The Funkee Homosapien, Mike D, Miho Hatori, Sean Lennon, and more.
Radiohead - Kid A
Dave Matthews Band - Crash I love this album. if you notice, this is the first time I've listened to DMB since I started this. I'm not a fan of this "type" of music but I really do enjoy Dave's songs; they're sweet and beautiful, totally soothing, unlike most of what I listen to.
Squarepusher - Feed Me Weird Things
Bjork - Selmasongs very good but it seems old now :/
Bjork - Unplugged very interesting non-electronica renditions of Debut masterpieces. unfortunately this downloaded version is full of skips and static! argh!
Black Eyed Peas - Behind The Front borrowed from Russell. good cd, sounds like rap porn.
Sunday, October 22 - Saturday, October 28
Radiohead - Kid A it's all about "Morning Bell" little buddy!
Radiohead - The Bends I don't know which Radiohead era I like better. these songs are so much simpler, but ever so effective. and they're great. they're just rock. highlight: "Bulletproof"
Black Eyed Peas - Behind The Front full of great songs and I intend to buy it
Local H - As Good As Dead I love this cd, I don't know why I never listen to it. every song is great.
Portishead - Dummy
Smashing Pumpkins - The End Is The Beginning Is The End Remix EP borrowed from Napack; "you can watch the world devour anything!!"
Sunday, October 29 - Saturday, November 4
Radiohead - Kid A great bass. I love how Shirley Manson from Garbage doesn't "get it." and how Sugar Ray's Mark McGrath thinks this album was a big mistake.
"Batman & Robin" Soundtrack borrowed from Napack as well. actually a really good cd. Underworld, R.E.M., Jewel, Moloko, Soul Coughing songs stand out.
Godspeed You Black Emperor! - F# A# Infinity one of the most interesting and moody albums ever made without the usage of singing or lyrics.
Outkast - Stankonia NEW. very fun cd. musically amazing. lyrically a bit tacky. too many songs about ghetto sex. too many amateur guest artists. not as good as Aquemini but good nonetheless. picks: "B.O.B.", "Gasoline Dreams", "Ms. Jackson", "So Fresh, So Clean", "I'll Call Before I Come"
U2 - All That You Can't Leave Behind NEW. not a bad album, but too ordinary for such talented musicians. the singing on many songs sounds too much like Elvis Costello. they're lovely vocals, but too warm and cuddly for the singer that sang "Bullet the Blue Sky" and "Sunday Bloody Sunday." I'm not asking for raw vocals, but not so sweet. this is a very 'pop' (but not Pop) album. musically this cd is very good; reviews are right, The Edge does use his guitars for atmosphere rather than riffs. it does well. but sometimes the music gets to sound a bit too much like Filter or "Palo Alto" by Radiohead. a very happy album though.
Sunday, November 5 - Saturday, November 11 [FINAL WEEK]
Outkast - Stankonia so, so, so good. it rocks straight through. crazy techno music, energetic - no, super-hyper - rapping. I like what Andre said in an interview about how they could've made an introspective, laid back album but the time wasn't right for that. so they made an album that I feel has more "rock" than anything that's come out since the mid-90's.
U2 - All That You Can't Leave Behind
Radiohead - Kid A
Nine Inch Nails - Things Falling Apart downloaded. THIS CD IS INCREDIBLE! it is so Aphex Twin! a pleasant surprise.
Bjork - Post
