ways to save hip-hop, according to Common
Also, make a point to see the film Underground, it's really excellent (click here for info). One of the funniest movies I've ever seen, and yet one of the most moving. I liked this a lot more than Life is Beautiful, which is somewhat similar in story and style.

From my sociology book, an interesting dissertation on the many meanings of the word "shit" among ghetto blacks. Excerpt:"Sheee-it" is elegantly negative, both in content and in form of delivery. When pronounced in a descending melody, the phrasing gives the word, even apart from its content, a cynical, negating tone. In content, shit is about as purely negative an image as any that could be thrown into a conversation. The existential fact that we are, each of us, literally (if also narrowly), walking, talking containers of excrement is remarkable for its typical absence from overt public attention. When used to start a speaker's turn in conversation, "shee-it" brilliantly executes a simultaneous expression of two dialectically related themes: (1) the fact that I speak to you coherently displays my ability to shape myself to fit into your unerstanding and (2) the fact that I begin by tying your impression of me to shit suggests that the social form I take on is but a thin veneer over a nature that is obdurately beyond social domination.

A good friend recently gave me the September 2002 issue of Filter, a big, glossy music and movie magazine given away free at all Urban Outfitter stores (I think). Within this single issue is an interview of Dan "The Automator" alone AND with Beach Boy Brian Wilson, and interviews with Bjork, director Mark Romanek, the directors of Tron and Scarlet Diva, Rakim, Jazzanova, Ladytron, The Avalanches, Bruce Campbell, and more. Next time you pass by a trendy store stop in and swoop out!- 3/23/03 7:26PM

- Michael Moore's Oscar speech (video link):
Whoa. On behalf of our producers Kathleen Glynn and Michael Donovan from Canada, I'd like to thank the Academy for this. I have invited my fellow documentary nominees on the stage with us, and we would like to — they're here in solidarity with me because we like nonfiction. We like nonfiction and we live in fictitious times. We live in the time where we have fictitious election results that elects a fictitious president. We live in a time where we have a man sending us to war for fictitious reasons. Whether it's the fictition of duct tape or fictition of orange alerts we are against this war, Mr. Bush. Shame on you, Mr. Bush, shame on you. And any time you got the Pope and the Dixie Chicks against you, your time is up. Thank you very much.- What you didn't see: 12 minute backstage press conference after the acceptance speech (Broadband). Really something to hear/see.
