Actually I guess I just have one question: Are you ever going to release this stuff?
Over the years I've kept a journal of information on unreleased music. Below is everything I know. Most of this was mentioned in magazine articles/interviews. To the band members: Help a brother out and answer some of these questions. Goddamn this noise inside my head, nahmean?

SONGS

• Alternate version of "Down In It": the version on Pretty Hate Machine is not the mix Trent wanted on the album.
• Another alternate version of "Down In It" appears on various bootlegs. It's the "Big Whole Mix" [sic].
• "Many" unreleased covers. Trent practices Joy Division songs on guitar because they're easy to play.
• Unreleased Fixed remixes:
• "Gave Up" by Coil. A clip of the remix, which is different from the one they contributed to Fixed, appears in the film Young Americans unaltered by any dialogue or sound effects.
• "Last" by Butch Vig. Clip used as an outro for "Throw This Away". Rejected by Trent, who reportedly called it "garbage" (a name which Vig used for his band two years later). Popped up online in full one day on an FTP, but in poor audio compression.
• "Closer" was remixed by John Balance of Coil for the opening credits" of Se7en. It is based heavily on their "Precursor" remix on the Closer single. This independently remixed track, done specifically for the film, was not released on the soundtrack or anywhere outside of the film itself. Info.
• Unreleased song or remix (possibly of "Somewhat Damaged") hidden in the high bandwidth version of thingsfallingapart.com.
• Unreleased remix of "The New Flesh" used in thingsfallingapart.com.
• Porter Ricks remix of "Starfuckers, Inc." rejected from Things Falling Apart. Squarepusher-esque in style.
• Telefon Tel Aviv remix of "Even Deeper". Routinely performed live by TTA and intended for release on their New Port South soundtrack, but no album was released after the film failed at the box office. It may or may not have ever been played in theaters, but it can be bought on DVD. To hear the remix listen to a TTA live set (such as Columbus, OH) or see the movie (unconfirmed appearance).
• Danny Lohner remix of "We're In This Together".
• Danny Lohner remix of "Please".
• Most likely recorded a second song for the 1994 The Crow soundtrack (which includes "Dead Souls"). In his old Prodigy posts Trent predicted two songs would surface, so maybe one was rejected and remains unreleased. Source.
• "Just Do It": partially recorded for The Downward Spiral but abandoned after Flood[?] threatened to leave if the song was released. Trent calls this his most disturbing song he's ever written. The only lyrics: "Just do it. Nobody cares at all."
• "The Beauty Of The Drug": apparently an unfinished song from the Downward Spiral sessions. On the interview disc Disturbed Trent is asked "Would you ever use--or have you ever used drugs to cure the pain of what you write about?" to which he answers "Definitely. And still do, to a certain degree knowing that--there was a song didn't make it on the record because it wasn't finished called 'The Beauty Of The Drug' and that will probably appear when I finish it... if I finish it." Perhaps this song became "The Perfect Drug" like some people suspect.
• "Love Gun": a Kiss cover that would've appeared on the Broken-era Kiss tribute album Kiss My Ass.
• "Metal": before it was eventually released on Things Falling Apart, it existed in at least three different forms. It was recorded as a demo way back in 1995 during the Downward Spiral tour (Source). It was also listed for inclusion on a Gary Numan tribute album with Garbage & Marilyn Manson, according to the February '97 issue of Kerrang!. Finally, it was completely finished for the 1998 X-Files movie soundtrack. Trent pulled out of the soundtrack perhaps because a Filter song was the chosen lead single, or perhaps because he felt it did not "represent" NIN at the time (see: "The Perfect Drug").
• The Fragility 2.0 tour book contains a picture of a list of songs, including "Anomaly" (which later became "The Way Out Is Through", as shown by a tracking sheet on the web site) and "Stained" (completely unreleased).
• "Water" is another unknown song according to the U.S. Copyright Office site. "Created: 2001" and "Registered: 16Aug01" in the category of "NIN-quiet, July/Aug. 2001 final mixes. Sound cassette." Perhaps a Still session sent around on a demo tape?

• Has material for a female vocalist project. [Elab]
• Recorded an album's worth of material between Pretty Hate Machine and Broken. [Elab]
• May or may not have written music for the Mark Romanek film One Hour Photo. Music from The Fragile, most notable "La Mer", was used in the early editing stages of the film. Directors commonly do this so for this alone there is no reason to assume Trent was signed on to score the film (and indeed, the final version is not scored by Trent but a German industrial duo _____). Music from American Beauty and Requiem For A Dream was also used. However, there was talk of Trent contributing to the soundtrack.  [Elab]
• There is unreleased music that was destined for a 12" EP/single coinciding with NIN's stint on the first Lollapalooza tour. The two bonus tracks on Broken are described by Trent as this EP's "leftovers." This could mean there are still unheard tracks.
• Was to work with former Beastie Boys touring keyboardist and studio musician Money Mark. Info.
• Originally recorded demos for The Downward Spiral's follow-up in 1996 and 1997 with producer Rick Rubin. Given the producer's hard edged output (Slayer, System Of A Down, early Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers), the material probably sounded quite different from what became The Fragile. I wouldn't be surprised if none of these early songs ever surfaced.
• From 2000 through 2001 Trent returned to songs he left unfinished from The Fragile. Finding himself in exactly the same state of mind from where he left off, he forced himself to stop. "And All That Could Have Been" is one of those completed recordings, but most of the unfinished material will probably remain abandoned for years, if not forever.
• Rumor has it that the 2001-2002 sessions with Alan Moulder that Trent described as "pretty primitive, stripped-down, minimalist brutal music" have been scrapped as well and that NIN is "done" and there won't be another NIN record. Sounds doubtful but maybe those synthesizer-based sessions were scrapped as Moulder is out of Nothing Studio and is onto other projects.
• Trent has copyrighted collections of music called "12/00 concepts", "T01-01", and "1HRP", so perhaps rough demos from 2000-2001 are floating around out there on "sound cassettes" or CD-R's.
• In interviews Trent expressed his frustration with the gift and curse of being able to work on literally "dozens" of tracks for The Fragile at the same time with the software technology of the late '90s. This means dozens are still unreleased. He mentioned releasing a pair of EP's (at one time he was going to call one More Fragile) that, instead of remixes, would contain leftover tracks since he decided not to make The Fragile three discs long.
• There was to be a NIN/David Bowie 1995 official live album but it was cancelled when Interscope and Warner split.
• Unreleased live session for Chicago's Q101. Leaked online nearly a year later from one of the (supposed) six copies of the master CD. No explanation for why it wasn't broadcast. The version of "The Day The World Went Away" was included on Still but the other selections remain unreleased.
• There were plans for a 1998 Nothing compilation that would have featured a new NIN song, another collaboration with Ice Cube, and other Nothing Records exclusives.
• Was asked to mix some material for The Good, The Bad And The Ugly, a project album by Prince Paul, Automator, and Mike Simpson (half of the Dust Brothers). It was to be done completely on three turntables, three sampling machines, and vinyl records. Tracks were also sent out to Dave Grohl, Cornershop, De La Soul, and Spain (members of the latter two groups appearing on the Handsome Boy Modeling School album). RZA and Beck were also to add vocals. Info.

Jerome

• Currently recording an album as Last Legs, playing all or most of the instruments himself. Jonathan Gorman is engineering and co-producing. [Elab]

COLLABORATIONS

Trent

• Helped industrial band Sister Soleil re-record "A Warm Place" for the Stigmata soundtrack but the song was rejected because the executive producers did not care for the singer's voice.
• Producing and collaborating with ex-Rage Against The Machine frontman Zack de la Rocha for his debut solo album.
• Collaborating with Richard Devine. Some of the material may not end up on the next NIN album, but perhaps on a Richard Devine release or a elsewhere. [Elab]
• Recorded at least a couple really good songs with Dr. Dre a few years ago. [Elab]
• Said he'd like to work with alternative R&B singer Kelis. [Elab]
• Had agreed to work with Aaliyah some day. This never happened. Rest In Peace, Aaliyah.
• Would love to work with Gary Numan on a project, and vice versa. This has not happened yet because of Trent's busy schedule.
• Has done production work with Flood for Robert Smith's solo album.
• May collaborate with Alec Empire in the future.
• "Something diabolical" is the description Trent offered in regard to a planned future collaboration with Marilyn Manson.
• David Bowie/Brian Eno/Trent Reznor would be Bowie's ideal project album.
• Jack Dangers said he wants to remix NIN again. He also confirmed that he has "nothing but respect" for Trent & Nothing.
• Nothing signees whose albums never got released: Trust Obey (94-96) and Mondo Vanilli (93-95; their story here). Trent is very hands-on with his official signees (not counting albums Nothing merely licenses from other labels), so it's quite likely he had a hand in producing or performing songs with these acts. Rumored (unconfirmed) signees who also probably would have worked with Trent include Cop Shoot Cop (96) and The Wolfgang Press (96). Both bands broke up soon after the rumors surfaced. In addition, Trent has always wanted to release Coil's back-catalogue on Nothing, as well as an unreleased album called Backwards (now: The World Ended A Long Time Ago); 12 Rounds recorded a new LP (Trent co-produced); Prick worked on music for years before 2002's self-released The Wreckard, including old demos that were broadcast in Nothing Studios while they recorded The Fragile. Danny

• Worked on an album for Samantha Sprackling (Saffron[?]) from Republica, also featuring Toni & Dean from Curve; described as a sleaze-pop album. [Elab]
• There is some speculation, due to their remix output, that Danny may do an album with Joshua Eustis of Telefon Tel Aviv. When I asked TTA's label (Hefty Records) owner, John Hughes, about this he wasn't aware of any collaborative album.

• Recorded many songs with Concrete Blonde singer Johnette Napolatino [sp?], who describes Danny as one of her favorite people in the entire world and someone who has boosted her confidence through tough times. Not released yet, but the singer "hopes it gets heard."

Recorded music with Toni Halliday that probably would have ended up on the Tapeworm album. As of 2002 Toni says the material will not be used because Tapeworm has "changed direction." [Elab]

Charlie

• Producing and performing on ex-Helmet singer/guitarist Page Hamilton's first solo album. This project also features electronic musician Ben Neill. Info. [Elab]
• Worked with Chino Moreno of the Deftones. [Elab]
• Worked with Snoop Dogg on what is described as a "heavy" Snoop album. Info. [Elab]

Trent

• Said he was remixing two tracks from David Bowie's album ...hours. These remixes, if they were recorded, have never surfaced.
• Expressed interest in remixing some of Sigur Ros's older material.
• Supposedly remixed Wolfgang Press' "Queer"; if so, it remains unreleased.

Danny

• Remixes of U2's "Elevation".

Charlie

VIDEOS

• "March Of The Pigs": original non-performance version. "According to a cameraman who works on NIN videos: '...I'm not talking about the video where it's just one shot, one take, live recording in the 'white' room video, I worked on the one by Peter Christopherson...You'll have to excuse me because it was a real real long time ago since I worked on it...We shot it in two days around the end of January 1994. The thing was, I don't think we shot everything we were supposed to...you see, there was supposed to be a third day of production...never happened! What we did shoot was stuff with the entire band (not just Trent) in various 'dark' situations. Essentially trashing instruments and other items along the way. We did a lot of 'dutch' angles, a lot of fast-paced stuff...all in all, to me, it seemed like an angry, aggressive, Evil Dead II meets Hellraiser mini- movie...a lot of hanging chains and always a watered-down set... but, I don't know if it was ever cut together, or if it is in somebody's closet somewhere...'" • There are "at least three" versions of "Head Like A Hole". Source.
• A "letter-boxed" video for "Last"; not seen on any copies of the Broken video or Closure but mentioned by a NIN fan on Usenet years ago. Source.
• "Gave Up": the Broken video has a completely different video from the studio performance on Closure, keeping with the snuff feel of "Happiness In Slavery" and "Pinion". (Sources)
